The fight against hunger in Gig Harbor continues, and you can be a part of it! Altrusa of Gig Harbor is hosting its highly anticipated 10th Annual Empty Bowls Fundraiser, a community-driven event dedicated to supporting local hunger relief efforts. This heartwarming initiative brings together generous corporate sponsors, talented local artisans, generous restaurants, and compassionate community members to make a real difference.
The History and Mission of Empty Bowls Fundraiser
The Empty Bowls Fundraiser began in 1990 as an international grassroots movement to fight hunger. The concept was simple yet powerful—local artists create handcrafted bowls, which are then sold to attendees who receive a humble meal of soup and bread as a reminder of those who struggle with food insecurity. Since its inception, the project has spread worldwide, raising millions for hunger relief.
Altrusa of Gig Harbor adopted the Empty Bowls initiative a decade ago, ensuring that funds raised go directly to local hunger relief programs. Over the years, this event has become a community staple, drawing hundreds of attendees who come together in support of their neighbors in need. Proceeds benefit food banks, school meal programs, and other initiatives aimed at eradicating hunger in Gig Harbor.
What to Expect
At the Empty Bowls Fundraiser, guests are invited to purchase a beautiful, handcrafted bowl created by local potters and enjoy a delicious meal of soup and bread. Each bowl serves as a powerful reminder of the empty bowls in our community and the ongoing need to provide food assistance to those who need it most.
A Simple Meal, A Big Impact
Each bowl purchase starts at just $10 and includes up to two servings of soup with fresh bread. Attendees will have the opportunity to sample a variety of soups prepared by some of Gig Harbor’s best local restaurants, ensuring a flavorful and comforting experience.
Altrusa President Nancy Hohenstein shares, “We’re preparing to surpass last year’s numbers, and we encourage the public to attend. Every bowl purchased represents a helping hand to those struggling with food insecurity in our community. It’s a simple meal, but it carries a powerful message of gratitude and giving.”
