Location

This area extends from the Narrows bridge, North to Downtown Gig Harbor and lies East of Highway 16 and the Uptown/Olympic Village retail District.

The Narrows bridge is a crossing of the Narrowest part of Puget Sound, a large sheltered inlet in Western Washington. Colvos Passage branches off of the Narrows and wraps around Shore Acres offering spectacular views.

The charming, historic Gig Harbor City Center is only minutes away and Tacoma can be accessed in 10-20 minutes as can the bustling Uptown commercial area.

Without traffic you can get to Seattle in less than an hour, but during peak traffic times that could nearly double.

Both of these commutes consist of crossing the Tacoma Narrows Bridge. In 2007 a second Narrows Bridge opened for eastbound traffic only, alleviating the massive traffic that the original bridge funneled both directions for many years. As a result, there is rarely any traffic and few closures at the Narrows crossing. For many years it was one of the biggest bottleneck in the areas prior to the opening of the new bridge.

Attractions

The big attraction here is easy access to one of the most quaint small town’s in Western Washington, downtown Gig Harbor, with cute shops, local dining and lovely parks. This is a major destination for weekend boaters in Puget Sound. This charming Maritime town offers all sorts of water and boating activities including kayak rentals, boat cruises, and an authentic Italian Gondola ride.

It also features the grand Maritime Museum which not only offers a look into Gig Harbor’s history, but is also a popular venue for live events and concerts.

Gig Harbor is known for it’s many small-town festivals, parades, and events, such as the well-attended concerts in the park on the downtown waterfront to the well-known Maritime Festival and the Downtown Christmas tree lighting and the lighted boat parade.

Another bonus is easy access to the commercial Uptown district with the luxury Galaxy Theatre, bowling, laser tag, and other activities at Oceans 5, or just shopping at the numerous retailers including Homegoods and Marshall’s.

This area also features several medical facilities for quality healthcare and St. Anthony’s Hospital is only 10-15 minutes away in Gig Harbor North.

Gig Harbor North also is home to the large modern YMCA offering recreational programs and services for all agesincluding a swimming pool, climbing gym, sauna, indoor running track, youth center, and more. This community-based non-profit offers empowerment and an inclusive space where people of all ages can learn, grow and improve their health.

As a parent raising children in Gig Harbor, and a resident for 25 years, I have found the schools here a big attraction and have been very happy with them. The reputation of the school system is a big draw to people choosing to relocate to the area. I believe they are a reflection of the engaged and strong local community and part of the reason I have chosen to stay here.

Outdoor Activities

For walkers, runners, and bikers, Shore Acres hosts the entrance to the Cushman Trail, a 6.2-mile walking and bike trail with various grades, onsite parking, restrooms, and seating along the way. Gig Harbor’s downtown offers other options for walking and running (both very popular in the Harbor).

The Gig Harbor area has many quality parks including dog parks, a skate park and nearby are state parks like Kopachuck with large forested trail areas and accessible beaches.

As the rest of Gig Harbor, a golf course is always nearby. For this neighborhood, the nearest is the Madrona Golf Course with it’s own rustic but popular clubhouse and restaurant. The prestigious Canterwood Golf and Country Clubis only a 15-minute drive away and the Gig Harbor and Key Peninsula are host to numerous Golf courses.

I love that the Pacific Northwest, and Gig Harbor, in particular, offer all kinds of opportunities for outdoor enthusiasts, from Mt. Rainier and ski passes, to the Puget Sound and nearby Pacific coast areas, all within a couple of hours drive.

Shopping

A short 5-10 minute drive puts you in the heart of the large retail district on Pt Fosdick Drive, also known as “Uptown”, named after centerpiece upscale shopping area that was built in 2008. Uptown itself features all types of stores from local boutiques to commercial chains like Marshall’s, J. Jill, and Ann Taylor Loft. You can find everything you need in the area from coffee shops, restaurants, major grocery stores, services such as dry cleaners, and even a large Cinema.

The amenities of the area are too much to list but some highlights are a medical center, a large, classy family fun center with bowling, dining, shopping, and other activities The newly built gourmet grocery, Metropolitan Marketoffers upscale options in a big box atmosphere.

Around the corner from Metropolitan Market is the smaller local grocery, Harbor Greens offering a beautiful plant and flower selection, unique gifts, and a small deli. Few areas of Gig Harbor offer such easy access to this busy retail hub.

Even closer the East side of this area offers the new Ulta, Goodwill and other retail and dining options including the flagship Cutter’s Point Coffee Shop, a popular locals hangout.

About 15 minutes away is the large commercial area of Gig Harbor North with big box stores like Target, Costco, and Home Depot.
