First, a Quick Introduction

My name is Darren Rivers. I am the Northwest Realtor and head of The Rivers Group. I help families, professionals and retirees relocate to Gig Harbor every single year and I have lived here long enough to see how different neighborhoods truly shape daily life.

In this guide, I am breaking down where I would live depending on where I am in life, why I personally chose where I live now, and how I would think about Gig Harbor if I were relocating here in 2026.

Where I Would Live If I Were Moving to Gig Harbor Today

Canterwood: Why I’ve Lived Here for 20 Years

I live in Canterwood, and I have lived here for over 20 years. I am in my early 50s, my kids are grown, and I am still here because the lifestyle works for a wide range of people and stages of life.

Canterwood is a gated community in Gig Harbor North with roughly 800 homes. It is built around a golf course, though the neighborhood and the golf club are two separate entities. You can live in Canterwood without being a member, or be a member without living there.

Many residents choose membership because of the amenities.

You have access to a golf course, gym, pool, tennis courts, pickleball courts, a restaurant, and a bar. It genuinely feels like being on vacation every day.

My kids were raised here. They grew up taking swim lessons, tennis lessons, and playing golf. The streets are quiet, it feels safe, and people take pride in their homes.

Who Canterwood Is Great For and Who It Is Not

Canterwood appeals to:

  • Young families looking for safety and community

  • Professionals who want convenience and amenities

  • Retirees who enjoy a country club lifestyle

It is quiet, safe, and well maintained. If you are single and looking for nightlife, this is not the place for you. This is a country club lifestyle, not a nightlife lifestyle.

Location and Convenience Matter

One of the biggest advantages of Canterwood and Gig Harbor North is proximity to daily essentials.

Target, Costco, Home Depot, the YMCA, and freeway access are all just minutes away. If you commute to Tacoma, the airport, or even Bremerton, this location is extremely convenient.

From a home value perspective, Canterwood is one of the most sought after neighborhoods in Gig Harbor. Home values tend to hold and appreciate at a slightly faster pace compared to many other areas.

If I Were a Young Professional in My 20s or Early 30s

If I were a young professional, single, and in my mid 20s or early 30s, I am not sure I would live in Gig Harbor at all.

Gig Harbor is quiet. Most restaurants close early. Kitchens often shut down by 8:30 and many places close by 9:00. It is a mom and pop town, not a high energy city.

That said, Tacoma is only about 15 to 20 minutes away. Some young professionals choose to live in Gig Harbor for the peace and quiet and drive into Tacoma for nightlife and city energy. That can be a good balance if you value calm at home and action nearby.

If Waterfront Living Was the Goal

If budget were not a concern and I wanted a true waterfront lifestyle, Gig Harbor delivers in a big way.

Waterfront homes exist all over the area, including:

There are miles and miles of waterfront here.

That said, waterfront living is a completely different price category. Some homes sell for several million dollars, and that lifestyle requires serious financial planning.

The good news is you do not need to live directly on the water to enjoy it. There are seven public boat launches throughout the area. Even from Canterwood, I can be on the water in about ten minutes with a paddle board.

If I Were Raising a Young Family

If I were raising a young family, downtown Gig Harbor would not be my first choice.

I would lean toward neighborhoods with a stronger residential feel, quieter streets, and more space.

Great options include:

One important tradeoff to consider is commute time. The further out you go, especially toward the tip of Fox Island, the more time you add to daily drives. That can mean an extra 10 to 20 minutes to the freeway, school, or grocery store.

If I Were Retiring or Downsizing

If I were retiring or nearing retirement and did not already live in Canterwood, I would choose downtown Gig Harbor without hesitation.

During the Summer, downtown puts you at the center of activity:

  • Summer farmers markets

  • Free Tuesday night concerts

  • Coffee shops, breweries, and restaurants

  • Walkable waterfront paths and docks

It is easy to walk your dog, launch a paddleboard, meet friends, and stay active without needing to drive everywhere. For many retirees, that walkable lifestyle becomes incredibly valuable.

Areas to Watch Heading Into 2026

Gig Harbor is a small city, with roughly 10 to 12 thousand people within city limits and around 40 thousand in the greater surrounding area.

Downtown is largely built out. What exists today is mostly what will remain.

Growth is more likely to happen gradually in outer areas like Rosedale, Arletta, and parts of Gig Harbor North, where small pockets of new construction may continue to appear. This growth will be slow and measured, not explosive, but it is worth watching if you are planning long term.

Final Thoughts: How to Choose the Right Area

When it comes down to it, choosing where to live in Gig Harbor is about understanding tradeoffs.

Ask yourself:

  • Do you want privacy or walkability?

  • Do you value proximity to work or space and quiet?

  • Do you want a country club lifestyle or downtown energy?

  • What are your non negotiables?

Your two most important filters should always be:

  1. What you can realistically afford

  2. What matters most to your daily life

There is no reason to tour waterfront homes if they are outside your budget, just like there is no reason to live far out if commute time is a dealbreaker.

Gig Harbor has options for almost every lifestyle, but only if you choose intentionally.

If you have questions about relocating to Gig Harbor, my team and I are always happy to be a resource and help you think through the options.
